Do you think I should go for a cheap dresser for the baby nursery, where it won’t matter if it gets battered and colored on and chewed and all the other abuse kids put on it, and we would just replace it after a few years when they’re more mature and will take better care of their stuff (hopefully)…

Or do you think I should spend a few hundred and get a nicer, more durable one, knowing that if it gets battered, we will all just have to live with it for years and years and years?
I know I can just look on Craiglist for a used but quality piece of furniture for cheaper. It’s just hard to find something made by a good brand, with the right look – you have to look at exactly the right time on Craigslist.
What do you think is the most realistic option? Other ideas?

I would go with quality. It takes a lot to destroy nice furniture. I got my daughter a whole set, including a Lifetime crib, and plan on her having the same furniture for a while.

I got all used cheap furniture for the nursery for the exact reason so that it can get beat up and drawn on and have stickers put on it, etc.
I will probably invest in nicer furniture for my kids when they hit an age where they can take better care of things like maybe 11 or 12. It’s not worth spending hundreds on nice furniture and then get resentful of your kids when it gets damaged. They are just being kids. Spit happens.

My son has my 37 year old armioar and it is still in very good condition. My mother did paint it to match his room, it was pale yellow. My daughter has the dresser, painted white. And on one lucky day i was at a garage sale and found a night stand and desk by the same maker and was an exact match, and white!
To be honest, you will have to wait more than a few years before they take care of their stuff..in my case anyway. My son is 6 and when playing in his room things get banged around and dinasaurs go flying across the room, and cars crash into walls and furniture. He being rough, just playing like a boy.
So if you can find something you like that is in good condition second hand works, if not quality will last a long time.

I think you should spend money on a quality crib, for safety and so it will last a couple kids (if you plan to have more). For the rest, go hand me down or cheap. My favorite piece of furniture in the house is mhy old baby dresser that we painted and my daughter has now. If you wanted other mom opinions on this, here is a good resource:
